Help: Advanced Search

The Advanced Search can be accessed at any time by clicking on Advanced Search in the top menu bar.

The Advanced Search gives you these search options:

Searching for one word in one field
example: Searching for Dickens in article/chapter title
Step 1: Enter Dickens in the include box on the article/chapter row.
Step 2: Select Search.

Searching for three words in one field
example: Searching for Dickens, Curiosity and Shop in article/chapter title
Step 1: Enter all three words in the include box on the article/chapter row.
Step 2: Select Search.
By default only results containing ALL of the words are shown. This can be changed to ANY of the words, using the OR selector.

Searching for an exact phrase in one field
example: Searching the keyword field for records containing the phrase "old English", exclusing records that contain "old" or "English" in isolation
Step 1: Add double quotes around the search criteria.
Step 2: Select Search.

Searching for an article by a word in the article title, and the author name
example: Searching for Dickens in article/chapter title and Jones in authors.
Step 1: Enter Dickens in the include box on the article/chapter row.
Step 2: Enter Jones in the include box on the author row.
Step 3: Select Search.

Searching for articles matching one term but not another
example: Searching for articles containing Dickens as a keyword, but not Nineteenth Century in the publication title
Step 1: Enter Dickens in the include box on the keyword row.
Step 2: Enter Nineteenth Century in the exclude box on the publication title row.
Step 5: Select Search.
If you are searching for an article containing one term but not another in the same field, enter both terms in the same row in the include and exclude boxes respectively.

Setting Search Limits

The advanced search form allows you to limit your search results to:

  • An ABES section, e.g. Nineteenth-Century.
  • A record type, i.e. books, journals, websites or CD-ROMs.
  • A source type, e.g. monograph, interview, journal article.
  • Subject date range, e.g. works covering the period 1841-52.
  • Publication date range, e.g. books published between 1996 and 1998.
  • Records which have been specially recommended by the editors.

You can also search on specific bibliographic information - publisher, ISSN, ISBN, volume or edition.
