History of ABES and Routledge ABES

The Annotated Bibliography for English Studies was edited and founded by Dr. Robert Clark from the University of East Anglia, UK, and is a unique electronic reference tool in the field of English Studies. ABES was first launched on CD-ROM in 1997, while ABES Online became available in early 1999.

Routledge took on the ownership of ABES in 2004, undertaking an extensive redevelopment, and relaunched it as Routledge ABES in 2008.

Routledge ABES keeps the core concept of ABES - unlike other bibliographies, it does not try to list every single publication that comes out. Rather, its goal is to present users with selective bibliographies that address their specific requirements and refer only to relevant material of the highest quality.

Routledge ABES retains the best literary studies content from the previous ABES, while adding a regularly updated stream of new records.

There is a revised editorial structure, with a dedicated section editor for each literary period overseeing their network of contributors.

Routledge ABES is also powered by newly developed technology. A new interface, a new database allowing for more powerful searching, easier linking between related records, active linking to the covered material (where possible) and personalised research tools, including email alerts or RSS feeds of relevant new records, the saving and managing of searches and record lists and COUNTER-compliant usage statistics for librarians.
